More than fifteen years ago, I counselled a man who was unsure of himself and was then earning $125 a week. Now president of the nationally known company he joined then, he recently employed a new client of mine as his assistant—at $22,000.00 yearly. These men, and many thousands of men and women like them, made this book possible.
Several people closer to me have been of particular help. Each has given me a special kind of love and encouragement. My Mother. My wife, Katherine, has also given me patience as well as research assistance. Charlie Laue disciplined my thought and writing many years ago. Gaylord Herendeen, a man of quiet wisdom and inspiration, broadened my vision for service. Saul Gruner, loyal associate, helps in my educational and professional counselling activities, as does Eli Cohen—two who deserve special mention. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, my pastor, who has helped more people to find inner peace and success than anyone I know, gave stimulation and encouragement to the writing of this book.
I also thank an unnamed woman, whose influence on a business associate brought me to the depths of despair in 1941. This experience led me to discover prayer, God, and the power of constructive faith. I learned "the hard way" myself, and I know I could never have done it on my own. I learned that every experience—including adverse ones when handled rightly—points a man towards greater success. The greatest power for success in life is love for one's fellow man; it helps provide the strength needed when difficulties—everyday roadblocks to progress—make the going tough.
In business and professional life, I owe much to Raymond R. Zimmerman, Tom Noble, Al Foster and Bernard Davis—men who urged me to establish the Executive Job Counselling Service for veterans and members of the Society for the Advancement of Management. Edesse Dahlgren and Jack Wolff are among those whose cooperativeness for the last fourteen years has been real inspiration to me. Walter Rust, then Placement Director of the Harvard Business School, spurred me on, too; as did Edward C. Bursk, editor of the Harvard Business Review.
There are many others, and I would like to write a book thanking them all—as this one really does. Omissions are not intended. It's just that the publisher says I must thank each of the rest of you in this way: thank you, thank you.
